Find out the right way to transport artwork

Have you identified the right piece of art? You are probably quite excited about it. You, however, have to think about how to transport it. One of your options would be paying the printing company for shipping. If you don’t want to incur more costs, you could transport the piece yourself. Shipping artwork has to be done with a lot of caution since such prints are delicate. Any carelessness could lead to damaging the piece. You should, therefore, follow the right steps for you to transport the artwork so that it arrives in perfect condition. 

Start by measuring the art piece. Knowing the length, height, and width of the artwork can help you choose the right shipping tube or box depending on its structure. You should also figure out the dimensional weight of the artwork.  If you have an unframed art piece that is more than 48 by 48 inches or a framed piece that is above 18 by 24 inches, you need to ship in in a wooden crate. 

You can even come up with a custom crate as you take into account the accurate measurements of your artwork so that you can transport it appropriately. Corrugated boxes that feature double walls are often used in the shipping of small canvas prints. Such boxes minimize constant movement of the artwork during transportation and also provide sufficient space for padding. 

As you think of the best way to transport artwork, you should never consider reusing a box. Such a box not only looks unprofessional but also offers less protection for the art piece. If you bought an unframed art piece, you can roll it and transport it in a shipping tube that is sturdy enough. The tube should be more than 4 inches long. 

Before you place a canvas print in any box or tube, you need to pad it properly. Make use of a protective material such as cardboard, bubble wrap, or foam to pad the piece. Such materials can prevent the scrapes from forming on your artwork. Ensure that you handle the new art piece with care. If your artwork is unframed, you can cover it using glassine paper. Wrapping custom canvas prints with glassine paper protects them from moisture and dust. The paper should go over the piece entirely, including around the edges. Secure the paper with some tape. 

If you want to ship different unframed art pieces in a tube, you need to place glassine paper between every piece before you roll them. Ensure that you arrange the art pieces in layers starting from the largest to the smallest and let the pieces face the same direction. 

A painting that is covered with glass should be wrapped with cling film before transportation. This ensures that even if the glass breaks, the glass pieces will not come loose or damage the art. Whether you want to transport framed or unframed artwork, you should not overlook the corners. These regions are prone to damage. You can secure the corners of your art piece using artistic tape.
